Railways in general and the UK in particular, with its rich and varied railway history, contains many confusing terms, names and abbreviations, this glossary will hopefully clarify some of them for you. The glossary currently has 967 entries, but don't let that stop you suggesting additional entries. Please email any suggestions to M.Dewell@uel.ac.uk.

My thanks to Peter Betts for sending me a copy of his very comprehensive railway glossary to convert and merge with my own entries.

Thanks also to Richard Salmon (Bluebell Railway Webmaster) for his very detailed entries relating to carriages and wagons.
