RAIL 2000 MILLENNIUM CAVALCADE - CANCELLATION

Members of HRA Board were sorry to hear of the cancellation of the Millennium Cavalcade event planned for Shildon over the August Bank Holiday Weekend. Although the event was a private venture not directly connected either with HRA or any of our member railways, museums and steam centres, it had been hoped that the cavalcade would boost interest in the railway preservation movement and the achievements of what is now a major tourist industry.

By way of consolation to those who had planned to attend the event, we hope that HRA member organisations in the north-east and Yorkshire will be able to offer alternative attractions providing in particular both the opportunity to travel behind steam as well as to view it in action.

We are trying to draw the facilities and attractions of our member railways and museums to the attention of groups both from abroad and elsewhere in the U.K. who had booked to travel to north-east England for the Cavalcade. Assistance is being given by the British Incoming Tour Operators Association, the British Tourist Authority and other agencies. If you know of any groups (or indeed had yourself booked to participate in one), please pass details as soon as possible to:-

David Woodhouse, 8. Ffordd Dyfrig, Tywyn, Gwynedd. LL36 9EH
Tel + Fax: 01654 710344

We are also asking HRA member organisations in these areas to extend a special welcome to groups visiting their railway or museum over the Bank Holiday weekend in place of the Millennium Cavalcade and, where feasible, to provide "something special" whether a facility not normally available to visitors (e.g. a guided tour 'behind the scenes'), a complimentary tea or coffee or a small discount on normal charges.
