Preserved UK Railway Locomotives Database

Considerable effort is made to keep this database up to date (it currently contains records of 2897 locomotives), but my resources are limited and I can not therefore guarantee the accuracy of any information contained herein (especially the current locations). If anyone can provide additional information (or corrections), then please do so by email to M.Dewell@uel.ac.uk. If you have not done so before, please read the attached NOTES.

NOTES

* indicates a search field.

* Locomotive Number(s)
Many locomotives carried more than one number during their career. The Locomotive Number field contains all numbers carried in the order they were originally allocated. The number currently carried will be the only one in bold. The database will perform a word search for any records containing any (single) number you may specify.

* Locomotive Name
The database will return any records containing the search string specified any where in the name field (eg. a search for prince would match on both Black Prince and Princess).

* Company
Only the main companies are available for selection, for any others select ANY (the default). Where a class may have begun life under one company and (following a merger) finished under another, all locomotives of that class should be shown as the original company.

* Locomotive Class
Some locomotive classes were know by more than one name (eg 6000 and King refers to the same class). The database will perform a word search for any records containing any (single) name you may specify.

Gauge
Generally only locomotives above 15 inch gauge are included, exceptions are those locomotives based at sites featured else where in these pages.

Wheel Arrangement
The Whyte system (eg 0-6-0T) is used for steam engines and industrial diesels. Mainline diesels are given in the continental form (eg Bo-Bo).

Power/Transmission
The power is obvious in most cases, the transmission method less so. This field should make everything clear.

* Builder Name
The database will return any records containing the search string specified any where in the builder field (eg. a search for drewry would match on Drewry, Baguley/Drewry and Drewry/Vulcan).

* Works Number
The database will return any records matching the works number specified. This field does not use any form of wildcards, only exact matches are returned.

Built In
The date the locomotive was built.

Date Preserved
The date the locomotive entered the preservation scene (not necessarily the same date as being withdrawn from `main line' service as many locomotives had a second career on the industrial scene after withdrawal).

Current Condition
Obviously this changes regularly and should therefore be treated as just a guide (in other words, just because I have it labeled Operational, don't be surprised if it is not pulling your train if you visit the site mentioned).

Last Overhauled In
The date of the locomotives last overhaul/restoration.

* Current Location
The database will return any records containing the search string specified any where in the location field (eg. a search for norfolk would match on both North Norfolk Railway and Mid-Norfolk Railway).
This field is the most problematical as locomotives often move between sites (railtours, loans etc) and hence may not be at the location shown. If you want to locate a particular locomotive prior to a visit, you should contact the site listed (hopefully the contact details will be elsewhere in these pages) to confirm its current whereabouts.

Notes
Any additional information of particular interest.

Normally Based At
If the current location of a locomotive is not its normal base, then this field will show the usual location. (This field will not be displayed if blank).

See Also
A general field to provide a link to any websites with additional information about the locomotive, or location. (This field will not be displayed if blank).

And last but not least - the date the record was last updated (which should give you some indication as to the reliability of the information).

Please note that the REF=9999 numbers are used by the web lookup program for internal purposes only. The REF numbers are not part of my master database. A REF number may point to one locomotive one day and another the next!
